Main task; post production

March 8th- We started editing our filming. When we first looked through the filming, we realised there was a lot that had gone wrong that we had not noticed during the filming process. This means we are going to have to spend a lot longer editing to try to sort the mistakes out. Some of the mistakes were things such as the torch light, the fact that there wasn't enough light to film the scene and continuity problems.

Main task: pre production location pictures

These are our location pictures, from Hawthorne road in Yaxley. We decided to do our filming here because it was quiet and we were unlikely to be interupted by passers by. Although before we filmed we thought this was a good idea to film, we later regretted it, because there was not a lot of lighting so our filming was very dark. I think if we had realised this would be such a problem, we would have found a location with more lights, or changed our script, so that the majority of the setting was inside so we could light it properly. Also with the location being outside and because we filmed at night, it was very cold which affected our filming, if we had set our location to be inside, i think we would have got a better quality of filming and would have been able to spend more time on it and made sure there were no mistakes.

Main task: pre production- diary entries

January 25th- My group for the film noir task is me, Caitlyn and Katie. We discussed some ideas for what we could do for our film noir and put our ideas down on a mindmap. The ideas were things like what conventions we could include in our film noir such as the storylines and types of locations and charecters and props. We discussed some of the possible locations we could use to shoot our film. We agreed on our roles for the production; Caitlyn would be director, Katie would be cameraman and I would be editor. I have never done editing before so i thought this would be a good chance to do that.

February 2nd- We finished off the first draft of our script and read it out to the rest of the class. Once we had read it out, we then got some feedback from our class, what they thought was good and things that could be improved. We found this very helpful, as it improved our script, but there wasn't a lot for us to change. One thing we did change was some of the charecter names because they did not fit the conventions of film noir. We also put an advertisement up on a website called http://www.castingcallpro.com/ for actors to respond to if they were interested in being part of our production.

March 2nd- We booked the cameras out and planned to film our production on Tuesday 6th March. We had all the locations sorted that we were going to use and how everyone is going to get there. Also all our actors and props are sorted as well as charecter costumes.

March 6th- We started filming at 7pm, we decided to film at this time because it was dark and we thought this would fit into the film noir conventions. However, this proved to be a lot harder then we thought, because it was dark, we needed some light so we tried to use torches as the lights are not to be used outside, but when we looked back at the footage, we found that this hadn't worked very well at all. Also it was very cold, so this made everyone eager to get it done quick, which resulted in sloppy filming. Another thing we didn't notice was continuation. A few times we were caught out on this. I think to improve, we should have planned our filming a lot more, and made sure we had plenty of time to do it so we didn't feel rushed to get it done.

main task: pre production TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH graphs and conclusion

when we got our questionnaires back, we were able to put our results into a table so it was easier to analyse. By doing this we found that most people who watched film noir films were aged 51+ so our target audience was for people 51+. We found that peoples favourite sub-genre in film noir was mystery so we needed to include mystery in our film to please our target audience. We found that there was no gender preference for film noir, so we didn't have to aim our film at a specific gender.

main task: per production- lighting

all films are lighted, either naturally or artificially. the lighting can display types of mood and create a focus.
Three point lighting - key lighting, fill lighting, back lighitng.
Key lighting is the strongest and can be placed at the side of the camera.
Fill lighting is placed opposite the key light and is the secondary light, it is used to fill the shadows caused by the key light.
Back lighting- back lights are placed behind the subject and lights them up from behind.

RULES OF USING A LIGHT
-Never use  an extension lead
-Unplug other sources
-Dont use outside
-Ask for help
-Hold light with gloves
-Cant ask lighting guy to help you out with anything but lighting.
-Warn actors when lights are coming on
-Fire hazards/heat rises

in a film noir i would expect the male actors to be wearing things such as smart suits, long trench coats, and a hat.
we are hoping derek to look similar to this....

We are hoping Tony to look like this..........

main task: pre-production- location

We have decided to use yaxley shops because they have a perfect ally way which will be easy to film in and over to create the shots we need. As well we are filming in Caitlyn's house which is in Stilton because of the darkness of it and how empty it is to we can our things in it to make an office.. We are waiting for it to be dark so aiming to film for 6 and then finish at 10 at the latest.

main task: pre-production- actors

We made an advert on www.castingcallpro.com describing what we neede in our actors and what our film was about, making clear that we were only a-level students and that we couldnt pay them. Unfortunatly nobody came back to use regarding that, so we ended up finding actors ourselves. We could only find 2 guys to do our film because of others being caught up with either school work or other productions. So we are just going to use one of our actors to play two charcters, one of them being Joesph because you cant see his face. Our actors are:
Ben Johnson-Tony Nicholson
Jacob Sells-Derek Jones+Joesph Kennedy
